Gala In Talks With Orbis

Gambling giants Gala are facing up to the realities of the credit crunch by calling in software boffins Orbis to help them deal with the spiralling costs of maintaining their online gambling platform.  The bricks-and-mortar side of their business, which includes 156 bingo halls and 28 casinos, has recently taken a battering as people decide against nights out gambling, hoping to feather their nests in a period which promises to be financially austere.  This has resulted in the company’s share value almost halving, so a period of cost-cutting is a necessity.

Gala, who merged with sports betting specialists Coral in 2005, have been maintaining a full raft of services on their website, but running costs are causing raised eyebrows among the head honchos, and they feel that software experts Orbis are the people to help with making the service cost-effective.  Senior managers at Gala are reported to feel that their company, as a gambling company, needs to concentrate on delivering an attractive gambling service while leaving the software development to a company that has greater experience in that area and can do what needs to be done while keeping costs low.

This development comes as Gala plan a corporate restructuring to deal with the expected recession as customers look at streamlining their finances against a background of increasing financial uncertainty.  Gambling is seen as something of a pleasure pursuit, and a cost that is non-essential when many consumers are concerning themselves with essentials like paying their mortgages.  This will have the knock-on effect of affecting the profitability of gambling services, an eventuality that Gala are keen to head off by cutting costs where possible.  The proposed partnership with Orbis is a step towards this, and more details on this deal are expected to emerge in the coming weeks.
